Śramaṇa Huitong was a native of Yusu River in Wannian, Yongzhou. In his youth he delighted in the discipline of the Way and roamed among forests and springs; rigorous discipline and moral conduct were his constant practice. He retreated to Baolin Valley in Mount Zhongnan to live in seclusion and pursue his vocation. He read the Lotus Sūtra, and upon reaching the 'Bhaiṣajyarāja Chapter', he rejoiced in renunciation. He secretly gathered firewood and vowed to carry it out. In the late Zhenguan era, on a quiet night in the forest, he piled wood into a cave-like pyre. Reciting up to the 'Bhaiṣajyarāja Chapter', he ordered the fire to be lit. The wind arose and flames burst forth, smoke and fire both raging. Aloft, he sat cross-legged, chanting aloud as before. Soon after, from the southwest, a great white light flowed into the pyre, and only then did his body fall forward. By dawn, both body and fire were extinguished. His remaining bones were gathered and a white stūpa was erected for him, with an inscription carved to preserve his memory.
