Shi Sengda was a man of Taizhou surnamed Qiang. He went forth from home at a young age, fasted, practiced austerities, and read and chanted the Lotus Sūtra. During the Yining reign of the Sui, he made a vow to copy the Lotus Sūtra, but had not yet made offerings to it when a chronic illness suddenly flared up and he died abruptly. Due to his past deeds, he arrived at the court of Yama. When the king saw Sengda coming, he rose from his seat, came forward to welcome him, and entered the main hall of the court together with him. After they had sat down, he then spoke: "Master, according to your past deeds, you have come to my place. However, you copied the Lotus Sūtra and have not yet made offerings to it. Return quickly to the human realm; your past deeds are also pardoned, and you will be born in a pure land." Having heard the king's words, he left in silence, entered his original body, and revived. He then adorned the scrolls and made offerings to the sūtra scrolls. His place of passing is not known (drawn from the monastery records).
