Gai Hu was a native of Shanyang. He was once bound in prison and condemned to die. This man had customarily recited the Avalokiteśvara Sūtra. For three days and three nights, his mind was uninterrupted. Suddenly in the middle of the night, his eyes saw Avalokiteśvara, who also emitted light illuminating him. Instantly the shackles and fetters fell away on their own, the various doors opened of themselves, and [the figure] led Hu out. Hu walked, following the light; after he had gone a few li, the light was extinguished. Hu stopped and lodged amidst the grass, and on the morrow he departed at leisure and escaped. (Yingyan zhuan.)
