Wang Zhu, courtesy name Shuyan, was a native of Taiyuan. In the ninth year of Yuanjia of the Song dynasty, he served as the magistrate of Fuling Commandery. Having been implicated when brigands overran his post, he was imprisoned in the jail of the Jiangling administration, bound with a large set of lock and shackles, nailed shut extremely tight. While in prison, Zhu constantly maintained fasting and chanted the Avalokiteśvara Sūtra. One night, he suddenly dreamed that he was sitting on a high seat, and a man of the Way gave him a scroll of a sūtra entitled "The Chapter on Radiant Peaceful Practice", along with the names of various bodhisattvas. When Zhu received it, he opened and read it. He forgot the name of the first bodhisattva, but remembered that the second was Avalokiteśvara and the third was Mahāsthāmaprāpta, all accompanied by their lands and designations. When he awoke from sleep, he saw that the rear lock had already come undone. Zhu knew there was a sympathetic resonance and was no longer worried or afraid; he then nailed and fixed his lock himself and wore it as usual. After three days, the matter unexpectedly dissolved, and Zhu was released. In the nineteenth year of Yuanjia, he was appointed as acting administrative assistant in the Guard Headquarters and accompanied the garrison to Guangling. His vigor was utmost.
