In a foreign land there was a monastery called Bodhi Monastery. Over ten li to the south of it, a silver palace appeared in the sky, wherein devas and devīs were sporting and amusing themselves. There was also an apparition of a golden palace, within which was a holy monk. This was an extraordinary occurrence. The kings and ministers of various countries gathered like clouds to pay homage and make offerings. At that time, the holy one said, "The world is not at peace: grains and fruits do not ripen, and pestilence spreads competitively. This is truly because people do not have faith in the Three Jewels. The realm of the Three Jewels is inconceivable, inexhaustible to praise throughout kalpas as numerous as the sands of the Ganges. The power of the Buddhist scriptures is also inconceivable. Why is this so? I originally lived in Xier Temple in the country of Sahala, and my name was Fuyuan. Living in a small room at the temple, I constantly recited the Lotus Sūtra and attained anutpattika-dharma-kṣānti. The sūtra I recited was placed in a white box and kept inside the temple. My former skeletal remains were buried in an ancient tomb in the small hills over ten li west of the temple. Only thirty years after I cast off my life, by the power of my vows, my tongue has transformed into a glowing red, emitting light from time to time. By this you should know whether my words are false or true. Now I have come to display my past conditions. The heavenly beings in the silver palace were the attendants who assisted my sūtra-recitation." Having spoken these words, he vanished and was no longer seen. The kings and ministers were filled with both sorrow and joy. When they traced his original background, it was just as he had spoken, without error in a single detail. (This is taken from the Records of the Western Regions. Although not heard firsthand, it is now recorded here based on an ancient account.)
