Śramaṇa Tanyi was a native of Bingzhou. He went forth as a youth, dwelt at Shili Monastery, firmly maintained the prohibitive precepts, cast aside secular affairs, and practiced austere dhūta. Constantly dwelling on Mount Wutai, he vowed to rely on the Great Master Mañjuśrī to cultivate superior practices. Daily he chanted the Lotus Sūtra twice and read one fascicle case of the Avataṃsaka Sūtra, making this his constant practice. In this manner, he cultivated and accumulated merit over many years. Later, he traveled with his disciple Tanxun through the various peaks. Coming to the South Peak, he saw a nun whose mouth emitted light as she chanted the scriptures. Since Tanyi had made vows to chant the Lotus and the Avataṃsaka, his sincere devotion resonated: his own mouth emitted light, and amidst the light, transformation Buddhas appeared following the cadence of his voice. Near his death, he recounted this matter in full, saying, "Only I clearly saw it; other people did not see it." These words were indeed verified.
