Śramaṇa Sengzhi's vinaya practice was pure, and he took reciting the Lotus Sūtra as his constant practice. Zhi originally had no teeth, but made a vow to chant and recite. He dreamed that a Central Asian monk touched his gums with a willow twig, and upon waking, teeth had grown in his mouth. Once, when he climbed an ancient stūpa to recite the sūtra, he grew weary in body, fell asleep, and tumbled from the stūpa. Before reaching the ground, someone in the air caught him, so that he was unharmed. Zhi asked, “Who are you?” The reply came, “I am Vaiśravaṇa. If a person upholds the Lotus Sūtra, I will certainly protect him.” Zhi later went to the Western Regions, and his final end is unknown.
