Śramaṇa Huida took reciting the Lotus Sūtra as his constant practice. In the second year of the Long'an era of the Jin, he was digging licorice root on Beilong. At that time the Qiang were starving and captured people to eat them. Da was captured by the Qiang and locked in an enclosure. There were many people inside. The Qiang first selected the fat ones to eat. Da single-mindedly invoked Avalokiteśvara Bodhisattva and also recited the “Universal Gate Chapter.” When the Qiang had eaten all the other people, only Da and a young boy remained, marked to be eaten next. The following day, as Da finished his worship and recitation, the Qiang came intending to eat them. Suddenly they saw a tiger emerge from a clump of grass, roaring and giving chase. At that time the Qiang scattered and fled, and [Da] fortunately gained great peace. Taking the young boy with him, he returned to his original place. The power of reciting the sūtra stimulated Avalokiteśvara's response, which was made manifest in this way.
