Śramaṇa Fadao took reciting the “Avalokiteśvara Chapter” as his constant practice. Growing even more averse to noisy clamor, he entered the mountains to wander and recite the sūtra. Suddenly encountering bandits, [the bandits,] thinking that meeting a Buddhist monk was inauspicious, drew their bows and arrows to shoot him. Intending to loose their arrows, [the arrows] stuck fast to the bows, and they were unable to shoot. The bandits thereupon submitted, threw their bows to the ground, and realizing that they could not match such a spiritual person, abandoned them and fled. Because of his meditation, he escaped calamity—that was all.
