Shi Fafeng, whose surname was Zhu, was a native of Dunhuang. He went to Kucha and repaired a monastery, handling all affairs thoroughly; at the time it was called Fafeng Monastery after him. Having long taken sole charge of the monastery's responsibilities, he gradually relied on his merits, and his receiving and giving departed considerably from moderation. He arbitrarily reduced the monks' food provisions, leaving them inadequate. After a long time he died and was born among the hungry ghosts. He was constantly in the monastery, and after the initial watch of the night, he would make the sounds of hungry scampering and crying out, patrolling the rooms and shouting. His disciple Baohui heard it, sighed, and said, "This is my master's voice." He then asked why it was so. Feng said, "Because I reduced the monks' food supplies, I suffer the torment of a hungry ghost; the pain is severe and hard to bear. I pray you will rescue me!" His disciple copied the Lotus Sūtra and extensively held vegetarian feasts and repentances for him, whereupon he was born in a pure and superior realm. (Etc., etc. The Mirror of Self-Cultivation states that this is from the Accounts of Evidential Verifications.)
