The nun Zhitong left home in her youth and lived at the Jianjing Monastery in the capital. Her faith in the Way was not sincere. In the ninth year of the Yuanjia era, her master died and she abandoned the Way, marrying Liang Xifu of Wei Commandery as a concubine, and gave birth to a boy. When he was six or seven years old, the family was extremely poor, with nothing to make clothes. When Tong had been a nun, she had several scrolls of plain silk sūtras such as the Amitāyus and Lotus Sūtras; she boiled and pounded them all to clothe her son. After living thus for a year, she fell ill, trance-like and palpitation-stricken. Her entire body peeled and ulcerated, resembling fire sores. There were tiny white worms, more than a sheng of which came out daily. The pain was miserable and the poison agonizing, and she wailed day and night. She constantly heard a voice in the air say: 'You destroyed the scriptures to make clothes, and receive this severe retribution.' She died in a little over ten days (Fayuan zhulin, fascicle 18, states that this comes from Mingxiang ji).
