Zhu Daosheng, whose original surname was Wei, was a native of Julu who resided in Pengcheng. His family had been officials for generations; his father was the magistrate of Guangqi, and was called a good man in his hometown. From childhood, Daosheng was exceptionally intelligent, perceptive, and sagacious like a spirit. His father, knowing he was no ordinary vessel, loved and marveled at him. Later, he met Zhu Fatai and studied under him. At the age when his will was set on learning, he mounted the lecture seat; his questions, arguments, and speech were clear as pearls and jade. Later he studied under Master Kumārajīva. The monastic community of Guanzhong all regarded him as having spiritual awakening. He devoted his aspiration to lecturing on the Lotus Sūtra and composed a commentary in two fascicles. Whenever he laid out the mats to lecture, extraordinary fragrances perfumed the courtyard steps, and auspicious signs were indeed numerous. (Extracted from the Gaoseng zhuan and the colophon to the commentary.)
