Śramaṇa Huijin, whose secular surname was Yao, was a native of Wuxing. In his youth he was courageous and robust, unrestrained in nature and acting as an errant knight. At the age of forty, he suddenly awakened and his mind opened of itself, whereupon he renounced the secular world and resided at Gaozuo Temple in the capital. Eating vegetarian food and wearing plain garments, he vowed to recite the Lotus Sūtra. Straining his mind and laboring with hardship, whenever he held the scroll he would immediately fall ill. Thereupon he made a vow: he vowed to produce one hundred copies of the Lotus Sūtra to repent of his prior hindrances. Initially, he gathered one thousand six hundred coins. At that time, bandits came and asked Jin if he had any possessions. He replied: 'There are only the coins for producing the sūtras kept at the Buddha's seat.' Hearing this, the bandits left in shame. Thereupon he gathered faithful offerings and was able to complete the sūtras, fulfilling the full hundred sets. After the sūtras were completed, his illness also eased somewhat. He recited a complete copy of the Lotus Sūtra, fulfilling his heartfelt vow. Having fulfilled his heartfelt vow, his disciplined conduct became ever more resolute. He constantly dedicated all his meritorious deeds, vowing to be born in Sukhāvatī. Shortly before his passing, he suddenly heard a voice in the air saying: 'What you vowed has already been fulfilled; you will certainly be born in the Western Realm.' In the third year of the Yongming era of the Qi, he passed away without illness at the age of eighty-five.
