Śramaṇa Huiyu was a native of Huanglong. He came to travel in the capital and resided at Linggen Temple. From his youth he applied himself to study, visiting all the masters far and wide; he was skilled in discussion and had an admirable demeanor. Whenever he heard others praising or criticizing people, he would invariably stop his ears and not listen, or at times he would use other words to put a stop to it. His water bottle and robes were simple and plain, and he sustained himself with a single meal at noon. Diligent in his resolute discipline, he made rescuing the suffering his foremost priority. He recited the Lotus Sūtra, the Mahāparinirvāṇa-sūtra, and others. He also practiced dhyāna, being proficient in the five gates. Once, while resting, he saw three people come and knock at his door, all with pristine garments and caps, holding flower canopies. Yu asked: 'Whom are you seeking?' They replied: 'The Dharma Master is due to die; therefore we have come to receive you.' Yu said: 'There are minor matters not yet settled. Can it be postponed for one year?' They replied: 'It may be so.' When the next year completed one full cycle, he died. It was the seventh year of the Yongming era of the Qi; he was fifty-seven.
