Śramaṇa Fahui's original secular surname was Xiahou. From his youth he held firm to his resolve; his austere monastic conduct was as strict as ice. At the end of the Daming era of the Song, he traveled east to the Cave of Yu and lived in seclusion at the temple on Mount Tianzhu, reciting one copy of the Lotus Sūtra. Eating vegetarian food and wearing hempen robes, his mind delighted beyond the human world. He dwelt in his upper chamber without coming down for more than thirty years. Kings and nobles would halt their carriages and, after merely paying homage at his room, return. Only Zhou Yong of Runan, on account of his deep faith and understanding, was granted personal communion with him. When from time to time there were those who admired his virtue and longed to pay homage, they would occasionally be granted a single meeting through Zhou Yong's mediation. He died in the second year of the Jianwu era of the Qi at the age of eighty-five.
