Śramaṇa Faxu was surnamed Hun, a native of Gaochang. His moral conduct was pure and scrupulous; he ate a vegetarian diet and cultivated dhyāna. Later he entered Shu, practicing dhūta among the mountain ravines at Master Liu's graveyard, where tigers howled without harming him. He recited the Lotus, Vimalakīrti, and Suvarṇaprabhāsa sūtras, always staying within a rock chamber, alternating between dhyāna and recitation. In the height of summer, he relinquished his life inside the chamber; for seven days there was no foul odor, and from the left side of the corpse a fragrance emanated, dissipating only after ten days. Every night a light was emitted, illuminating for several leagues around. The villagers then built a grave and stupa over the corpse.
