Śramaṇa Sengyi was originally a native of Yuhang in Wuxing. From youth he possessed faith and understanding, early showing a demeanor that rose above the dust of the world. When he first left household life, he resided at Mount Lu Temple, where he relied upon Huiyuan to cultivate and study, keeping a strict vegetarian and ascetic discipline, and was held in high esteem by his fellow disciples. Later he went to Guanzhong, where he again studied under Kumārajīva, participating in and studying sūtras, vinaya, and abhidharma treatises; he also recited the complete Lotus Sūtra. In the thirteenth year of the Yixi reign period of the Jin, together with the śramaṇa Tanxue, a fellow of like mind, he traveled around Kuaiji to visit its mountains and waters; arriving at Qinwang, looking to the northwest, he saw five peaks standing side by side, resembling the shape of Gṛdhrakūṭa. Thereupon he tied thatch into a hut, calling it the Lotus Hermitage. The commandery governor Meng Yi and the wealthy man Chen Zai both devoted their hearts, admired his virtue, and assisted in its completion. Yi ate vegetables and drank from the ravine for over thirty years; his merit from reciting the Lotus was unsurpassed. In the dead of night there was a bright light: it was Samantabhadra appearing before him. He passed away in the twenty-seventh year of the Yuanjia reign period of the Song at the age of seventy. A stele was erected at the mountain temple to commemorate his surviving virtue.
