Yan Jing was a native of Yangzhou. His family was wealthy, but he had no sons. He took refuge wholeheartedly in the true Dharma and made reciting the Lotus Sūtra his practice. Later, a boy was born to him. At the age of three, due to a febrile illness, his eyes became dark. Yan taught him the Āyuhpramāṇa Chapter, but being young, he could not uphold it; he could only recite the title. In helpless circumstances, when encountering turmoil, [Yan] dug a pit inside the house, gave him food and clothing, and abandoned him to flee. After the turmoil subsided and the bandits departed, he returned only after three years. The house was destroyed, with beams and pillars scattered about. From below came a faint sound, and he remembered his blind son. Clearing the pit, [he found] his flesh plump and complete, and both eyes had regained their sight. Weeping with joy, he asked the cause, and the son said, "I upheld the title of the Āyuhpramāṇa Chapter of the Lotus. A person riding a white elephant came, radiated light, and taught me the phrasing and punctuation; as soon as I recited the first chapter, I gained sight, and he assisted me to complete the entire sūtra. Afterwards, I did not see where he went." Yan gave rise to a thought of wonder, and had him recite the sūtra; he was extremely fluent, as if he had upheld it for many years. This was something I personally heard.
