In Mianzhou there was a widowed concubine. For her deceased husband she wished to copy the Lotus Sūtra, so she hired a scribe for one hundred cash to copy it in a clean room. An ox arrived and died before the copying room. The concubine was alarmed and amazed by this wonder. In a dream a śramaṇa appeared and said to the woman: “The ox was your husband. Because he had taken grain from another’s field, he received the body of an ox, serving as a beast of burden for the landowner. Now, because of the copying of the Wonderful Dharma, he has cast off that body and been reborn in heaven, nothing more.”
