In Hengtang Vihāra in Changshan, there were several dozen bats fluttering about. A śramaṇa lodged in the temple and recited the Lotus Sūtra. The bats took delight in the sound of the Dharma while nestled in the wall. The wall suddenly collapsed, and they all died at once. Seeing them die, the monk made a prayer of blessing: "Since you have heard the Lotus Sūtra, you will surely be born in heaven." After three days passed, the monk dreamed of several dozen devas, their bodies bearing radiant light, coming to visit him and saying: "Because we heard the Dharma in this saṅghārāma, we cast off our bodies and were born in the Heaven of the Four Heavenly Kings; we have come to bid farewell on account of our original connection." The monk took the bats and buried them in the earth, erecting a stūpa above them, calling it the Bat Stūpa.
