Formerly, in India, there was a dwelling place with one hundred thousand śramaṇas. More than fifty thousand of them had already attained arhatship, their six supernormal powers clear and penetrating and their defilements fully exhausted; the remaining fifty thousand included those who had attained the lower three paths and those who had not yet attained them. There was a śreṣṭhin who wished to seek the bliss of merit among humans and devas to indulge himself; he came to the stūpa-monastery to set out food and drink and make offerings to the saṅgha. At that time there was a senior seat who was a great arhat possessed of the six supernormal powers; this man was extremely old, his beard white, his teeth fallen out, and his body withered and frail, yet he was the foremost head among the one hundred thousand persons. Having concluded the prayer of benediction for this śreṣṭhin, finished the food and drink, and completed the distribution of wash-water, he then said to the śreṣṭhin, “Dānapati! From this present giving you will only obtain great guilt.” At that time, those in the assembly who had not yet attained the Way all thought: “Is it because the senior seat is old that he utters these raving words?” The senior seat replied, “The matter is truly thus; these are not raving words.” The multitude asked, “This man planted merit; how can he obtain guilt?” The senior seat answered, “You know the first part, but not the second. This man plants merit and will again receive bliss among humans and devas; while experiencing this bliss, he will give rise to great arrogance, consider himself sufficient, and not seek liberation. Seeing the Buddha, he will not venerate him; seeing the sūtras, he will not read them; seeing śramaṇas, he will lack a heart of reverence; he will be heedless and self-indulgent. When his enjoyment of merit is exhausted, he will fall into the evil destinies for immeasurable asaṃkhyeya kalpas, emerging only when his guilt is spent. The reason he plants great guilt is because of receiving the great mundane retribution. If he had set his mind on the noble path in creating this merit, when he later received retribution, he would never have had such an outcome.”
