There is a dragon that can rain upon one country, or two, or three, up to raining upon the whole of Jambudvīpa with a single drop of water. The dragon thought to itself: 'I wish to store this single drop of water so that it remains forever and does not dry up; where can such a place be found?' It reflected thus: 'Nowhere else will do; only by placing it in the great ocean will it not dry up.' This is an analogy for giving a little in dāna and obtaining an inexhaustible, great reward: it can only be done by placing it in the Buddha Way. This illustrates that because the drop of water was united with the dragon's wisdom, the place upon which it relied was attained, and it did not dry up. Because dāna is united with prajñā, the place where it is set is attained, and it is never exhausted.
