During the Sui dynasty, the monk Daoyu practiced buddhamanasikāra toward Amitābha at Kaijue Temple, and made a sandalwood image three inches tall. Later, Daoyu suddenly died, but revived after seven days, saying, "At first, I saw a worthy person attain rebirth and reach the edge of the jeweled pond. The worthy person circumambulated a flower three times, and the flower immediately opened; he then entered and sat within it. When I circumambulated a flower three times, the flower did not open for me. I pushed the flower open with my hand, and the flower immediately withered and fell. Amitābha Buddha told me, 'Return to that land for now, repent all your offenses, bathe in fragrant water, and when the morning star appears, I will come to welcome you. Why did you make my image so small?' I addressed him, saying, 'If the mind is large, it is large; if the mind is small, it is small.' When I finished speaking, the image pervaded empty space." He then bathed in fragrant water according to the instruction, single-mindedly practiced repentance, and said to the assembly, "Recite buddhamanasikāra for me." When the morning star appeared, an emanation Buddha came to welcome him; the assembly all saw the light and heard [celestial sounds], and he thereupon ended his life. It was the eighth year of the Kaihuang reign era.
