Dharma Master Hong of the Sui dynasty was a native of Bingzhou. Throughout his life he was diligent, never holding money or jewels, constantly contemplating the Western Pure Land and looking forward to Amitābha Buddha. At the point of death, he saw boys and girls from Tuṣita Heaven coming to welcome him. The Dharma Master said, "I aspire to the Western Pure Land; I will not be born in heaven." He instructed his disciples to recite buddhamanasikāra, and said with his own mouth, "The Buddha of the Western Pure Land has come to welcome me." With these words his life ended, in the fourth year of the Renshou reign era.
