Dhyāna Master An of the Tang dynasty was a native of Bingzhou. He cultivated the practice of rebirth and constantly performed the vaipulya repentance. When his end was near, the two bodhisattvas Avalokiteśvara and Mahāsthāmaprāpta appeared in the sky. He summoned painters, but none were able to paint them. Suddenly, moved by his devotion, two men arrived, saying, “We have come from the Western Capital and wish to go to Mount Tai.” Thereupon they finished painting them, and once they departed, left no trace. The master said to his disciples, “Who can follow me to go to the west?” The youngest boy said, “I wish to follow you.” Thereupon he entered the bodhimanda, sat upright, and died, at the age of eighty. On the seventh day of the first month in the first year of Chuigong, he passed away.
