1.43

The monk Dao'ang was lecturing on the Saddharmapuṇḍarīka Sūtra in Xiangzhou. Suddenly he saw heavenly music coming from the sky, announcing, “This is Tuṣita Heaven, therefore we have descended to welcome you.” Dao'ang said, “The heavenly realm is the root of birth and death; I have never desired it. That which I contemplate is only the Western Pure Land.” As soon as he finished speaking, he saw the celestial performers of the Western Pure Land circling and coming to welcome him. The message arrived that he could not linger long. When his words ended, the incense burner slipped from his hand, and he peacefully passed away while upright on the high seat.
