Two śrāmaṇeras lived at Kaihua Monastery in Bingzhou. The younger śrāmaṇera said to the elder śrāmaṇera, “Brother, cultivate the Pure Land practice, how about it?” The śrāmaṇera rejoiced and shared his aspiration. After fifteen years, the elder one died first. Arriving in the Western Pure Land, he saw Amitābha Buddha and said, “I have a younger brother; can he be reborn here?” The Buddha said, “Because of him you gave rise to the aspiration; even you can be reborn, so why doubt him? Return to Jambudvīpa for now and diligently recite my name; after three years, both of you come see me.” He then revived and fully recounted the above events. In a later year, both śrāmaṇeras experienced the opening of the mind and purity of the eyes, and together saw bodhisattvas coming to welcome them. The earth then shook, heavenly flowers scattered in the sky, and both passed away at the same time, attaining rebirth according to their vows.
