Shensu of the Tang dynasty was a native of Mingtiao in Anyi. His profession was lecturing, and his renown was equal to that of Daojie. His lifetime activities were directed in thought toward the Western Direction. In the second year of the Zhenguan era, the assembly invited him to preside over Qiyan. On the twenty-third day of the second month in the seventeenth year, he gathered the great assembly to bid them farewell. Sitting cross-legged with a dignified countenance, he had them recite the Universal Gate Chapter of Avalokiteśvara twice. He himself chanted “Amitābha Buddha” and also had one person lead while the rest joined in harmony. In the middle of the night, sitting upright and dignified, he passed away. Although his flesh was completely exhausted, his bones remained seated as before.
