Baoxiang of the Tang was a native of Chang'an in Yongzhou. He went forth from the household at nineteen, practicing dhūta and keeping himself quiet. He bowed in repentance during the six periods of the day for nearly forty years. In the middle of the night, he recited the Amitābha Sūtra seven times and recited the Buddha's name sixty thousand times. When his illness grew critical, he chanted and recited without ceasing. He instructed the monastics and laity: 'Give priority to buddhamanasikāra; do not pass through the world in vain. I will wait for you in the Western Direction.' He also said: 'Burn and scatter my corpse; do not trouble yourselves to erect an inscribed pagoda.' When he finished speaking, he passed away.
