Dharma Master Demei of the Tang built a repentance hall in the western cloister of Huichang Monastery and practiced the pratyutpanna-samādhi. Throughout the entire summer he did not sit or lie down. At times he restrained verbal faults and did not speak for three years; at times he practiced the conduct of Sadāparibhūta, bowing generally to all seven assemblies. He restricted his clothing and reduced his food, severed worldly thoughts, focused exclusively on the Western Direction, and recited Amitābha with his mouth, never ceasing throughout his whole life. Later, at one time, he entered his room chanting the Buddha's name, and swiftly passed away.
