Zhitong of the Later Jin dynasty was a native of Fengxiang. Because he observed the Pure Land ritual procedures of Great Master Zhiyi, his joy and delight knew no bounds. From then on, he never spat toward the west, never sat with his back to the west, and focused his mind on buddhamanasikāra. Later, he saw white cranes and peacocks descending toward the west in rows; he also saw lotus flowers opening and closing before him. Zhitong said: 'The white cranes and peacocks are the realm of the Pure Land; the luminous form of the lotus flower is the place of taking birth. The Pure Land has manifested!' Thereupon, he stood up, bowed to the Buddha, and passed away. Upon cremation, five-colored auspicious clouds encircled and hovered over the fire, and relics lined his body like fish scales.
