Benru of the Song dynasty was titled Shenzhao. He resided at Chengtian Temple on Mount Dongshan. Together with the prefectural governor Zhang Xun, he formed a society. One day, he ascended the high seat to expound the Dharma, bade farewell to the assembly, and upon stepping down, passed away seated. At that time, fishermen on the river saw a monk departing toward the west amidst the clouds. The following year, when his stupa was opened, his facial appearance looked as if he were still alive, and a lotus flower grew before the stupa.
