Dharma Master Ji of the Song dynasty studied under Baoyun and resided at Taiping Xingguo Temple, where he devoted his mind earnestly to buddhamanasikāra. One day, he showed signs of illness and discoursed extensively on the profound purport for his disciples. The assembly suddenly saw light appear in the west and music played in the air. The master said: 'Amitābha Buddha and the two Great Beings have all arrived!' Thereupon, lying on his right side facing the west, he passed away. A disciple dreamed that Amitābha Buddha bestowed a prophecy upon him that he would become the Tathāgata Chaoshi ('Transcending the World'). Others dreamed that the master was seated upon a blue lotus flower pedestal. Chan Master Fazhi sighed in admiration: 'Lying ill, he discoursed on the profound; at his passing, he saw the Buddha. This is truly worthy of reverence!'
