The monk Sizhao of the Song studied doctrinal teachings and the Chan school, focusing his mind on pure karma. Every night at the fourth watch he arose to chant the Buddha's name; negligent monks found no leisure for peaceful sleep. Emulating Dharmākara's forty-eight vows, he formed a pure association of monastics and laity fastening their mindfulness for thirty years. One day he contracted an illness and dreamed of a sixteen-foot golden body. He gathered the assembly for buddhamanasikāra. Suddenly, raising his voice, he chanted along with the assembly, bent his fingers to form a mudrā, and passed away seated. After cremation, his teeth and prayer beads were undamaged.
