Zhilian of the Song resided at Huadu Temple in Shangyu. At first he studied widely across the Chan gates; in his later years, he set his mind solely on the Western Direction. In the autumn, eighth month, of the first year of the Qingyuan reign era, he bade farewell to the assembly, saying: "In a dream I saw Amitābha Buddha surrounded by the great assembly preaching the Dharma. The Buddha said: 'All good people! You must focus your minds on pure karma to come and be born in my realm.' Seeing this superior sign, my rebirth is certain!" He then wrote a verse: / "Wild geese pass across the vast sky; / Their reflections sink into the cold water. / No cessation and no birth, / Within the lotus flower realm." / Having finished writing, he turned his body, formed a mudrā facing west, and passed away.
