Zhiyuan of the Song resided at Gushan on West Lake. He comprehensively understood various sūtras and engraved his mind on the Pure Land. He composed a commentary on the Amitābha Sūtra and the Notes on Assisting the West, urging rebirth. When he was about to pass away, he was interred inside joined ceramic vessels. Fifteen years later, heavy rains caused the mountain to collapse. Upon opening and inspecting the ceramic vessels, his physical appearance was solemn and intact, with both nails and hair grown long.
