Kejiu of the Song lived in Mingzhou. He frequently recited the Lotus Sūtra and vowed to be reborn in the Pure Land, being known at the time as “Lotus Jiu.” In the eighth year of the Yuanyou reign, at the age of eighty-one, he passed away while sitting. Three days later, he returned and said to people, “I have seen the Pure Land realm; it tallies with the sūtras. On the lotus pedestals, the names of those due to be born there are all inscribed. One golden pedestal bears the name of Master Xun of Guangjiao Cloister in Chengdu Prefecture; one bears the name of the Twelfth Son Sun of Mingzhou; one bears the name of Kejiu; and one silver pedestal bears the name of Daoist Nun Xu of Mingzhou.” Having finished speaking, he passed away again. Five years later, Daoist Nun Xu died, and an extraordinary fragrance filled the room. Twelve years later, the Twelfth Son Sun died, and heavenly music welcomed him in the sky—all just as Jiu had said.
