Fan Yan of the Song dynasty was a native of Renhe. He severed his mind from worldly affairs. His son was unable to manage the household, yet Yan paid no regard, merely saying, 'I am only a temporary guest.' Daily he recited the Lotus Sūtra and practiced buddhamanasikāra to Amitābha with single-minded diligence. Suddenly he saw Samantabhadra Bodhisattva riding a six-tusked white elephant and emitting golden light, announcing to Yan, 'Tomorrow at the hour of the rabbit you shall depart.' After one night, the Buddha and bodhisattvas came to welcome him. Taking his seat, he joined his palms and passed away.
