Lu Yuandao of the Song dynasty was styled Layman Xing'an. He lived at Hengxi in Mingzhou. Rising at dawn, he burned incense and sat cross-legged, his eyes never straying. First he chanted a verse: / 'Washing hands in the clear dawn, the palm leaves unfold; / Seeking no blessings, warding off no disaster. / Where worldly ties break, let them break; / Midst the light of the kalpa-fire, dance once round.' / Thereafter he recited neither sluggishly nor hurriedly, his voice like strung pearls. Daily he recited the Lotus Sūtra once and Amitābha ten thousand times, his mind racing solely toward the west. At eighty-five years of age, on the sixth day of the fourth month, he bathed, adjusted his garments, and passed away. When he was laid in the coffin, suddenly an aromatic scent of lotus flowers was smelled; no one knew whence it came. Drawing near to inhale it, it came forth from his mouth.
