Li Zhiyao of the Tang dynasty was adept in the Pure Land teaching and led the assembly in the five-tempo buddhamanasikāra. Later, due to illness, he suddenly said, 'The Buddha has come to welcome me.' He washed, changed clothes, asked for an incense burner, exited the hall, and made prostrations. A verse was heard spoken in the sky, containing the lines: 'Leading you to be born in the Pure Land, / Bringing you up onto the golden bridge.' Approaching his bed, he sat upright and passed away. The assembly smelled an extraordinary fragrance.
