Zhang Kang of the Song accumulated good deeds and was devoted to the Buddha, vowing to recite the Great Compassion Dhāraṇī one hundred thousand times to seek rebirth in the Pure Land. When he was over sixty years old, he fell ill and single-mindedly engaged in buddhamanasikāra. He said to his family: 'The Western Pure Land is right before the hall. Amitābha Buddha sits upon a lotus flower, and Weng'er is bowing to the Buddha on the golden ground.' Having spoken, he engaged in buddhamanasikāra and passed away. Weng'er was Kang's grandson, who had died at the age of three.
