In the Sukhāvatī realm, there are actually no women. Once women attain rebirth there, they all possess the form of a great man (mahāpuruṣa). Nowadays, those who paint diagrams of the nine grades and depict female forms are mistaken. This is merely preserving their original cause in order to illustrate that diverse types are reborn together. In the pure realm, even a male form cannot be found, much less a female form! Even so, women have three further afflictions: first, they are not as filial to their parents-in-law as to their own parents; second, they are not as gentle in managing servants as in caring for their children and grandchildren; third, they know how to practice giving but do not know how to extinguish greed; they know how to admire a male body, but do not know how to reform their female habits; and they know how to hurry to monasteries to serve śramaṇas reverently, but do not know how to seek within themselves. If one is clear about these three, then before leaving the Sahā world, one is already virtually a monk. Why worry about not being reborn in the Pure Land?
