In the boundless ocean of suffering, the shore is found in turning back; in the dark palace of accumulated eons, illumination lies in a single torch. That the Pure Land does not abandon evil persons leaves no room for doubt. Even so, while it is right to realize that there is a gate to turn toward good and deeply regret one's faults, it is unacceptable to rely on the idea that one may still be reborn while bearing karma, to commit evil with a complacent mind, and to gamble on a one-in-ten-thousand chance. The evil people of antiquity used this as medicine; the evil people of today cling to this and make it an illness. Therefore, the evil people of antiquity were the good among evil people; the evil people of today are the evil among evil people. How lamentable!
