Under the Great Ming, Mother Zhang, née Tao, was the second wife of Layman Shouyue of Changshui. The layman venerated the Buddha, and the mother was transformed by him, performing daily recitations without interruption. When the layman went out to worship at Putuo, the mother said to her two sons: 'In daily life I have contemplated the two phrases, "This mind makes Buddha; this mind is Buddha"; only now have I awakened. On the fourth day I shall go.' When the time arrived, she sat upright and departed. The next day, the layman returned and prepared the encoffining. Shortly after, five blue lotus blossoms emerged on the coffin. The layman was greatly astonished and marveled, feeling ashamed that though he was constantly with her, he did not know her practice of the Way was like this. Near and far, all who saw or heard of it sighed in admiration.
