Under the Great Ming, Liu Tongzhi was a native of the capital. He practiced buddhamanasikāra with earnest devotion. At the age of fifty-two he fell ill, and his recitation became even more earnest. His neighbor Li Baizhai had died earlier. Tongzhi's breath stopped, but from dawn to midday he revived and said to his family: 'Just now I saw a boat, said to be going to the Pure Land. There were thirty-six people aboard the boat, and Baizhai was among them. I was also counted as one, but my clothes were not clean and fresh, and I had forgotten to bring my recitation beads. They ordered me to change clothes and fetch my beads, and the boat has moored to wait for me.' His family hastily changed his clothes and hung the beads around his neck, and a moment later he departed.
