In the Great Ming, Mother Lu, née Xu, was a native of Jiading. Living as a widow, she set her mind resolutely on pure karma. Her husband had previously lent out a thousand gold pieces; she burned the contracts without collecting them, and gave away all her dowry and ornaments to others. She constantly bowed and recited before the Buddha without ceasing, continuing thus for ten years. One evening, she suddenly called her attendants, saying: 'Look to the east—is light shining forth? The time for my rebirth has arrived. You may assist me.' She then chanted the Buddha's name in a loud voice, joined her palms, and passed away.
