Ge Fan of the Song was a native of Chengjiang. Having passed the civil service examinations in his youth, he reached the rank of Chaosan (Court Gentleman for Consultation). Whether in his official quarters or his private residence, he always established a pure room and installed a Buddha image. Once, while entering the room to bow and recite, relics descended from the sky. In ordinary times, he broadly exhorted both monastics and laity with pure karma, and many were transformed through following him. A monk whose spirit traveled to the Pure Land while in samādhi saw Fan there. Later, without illness, he sat upright facing west and passed away.
