Daxing of the Tang resided on Mount Tai, cultivating the Samantabhadra repentance practice for three years, which moved the Great Being to manifest his body. In his later years, he entered the canon repository, made a vow, and reached out his hand to pick a roll, obtaining the Amitābha Sūtra. Day and night he recited and chanted it. When he reached three weeks, he saw on ground of vaiḍūrya the Buddha and two Great Beings manifesting their bodies. Emperor Xizong heard of this matter, summoned him to the palace, and bestowed upon him the title Bodhisattva Ever-Vigorous. A year later, the vaiḍūrya ground appeared again, and he died on that very day. An extraordinary fragrance lasted for ten days, and his physical body did not decay.
