Sun Liang of the Song dynasty was a native of Qiantang. Living in seclusion, he read the Tripitaka and gained a profound grasp especially of the import of the *Avataṃsaka*. Relying on Vinaya Master Dazhi, he received the bodhisattva precepts. He recited the Buddha's name ten thousand times daily for twenty years without interruption. Suddenly one day, he bade his family invite monks to practice buddhamanasikāra to assist his rebirth. When the monks had gathered and chanted the Buddha's name for barely half a meal's time, he gazed into the sky, pressed his palms together, and said, "The Buddha and bodhisattvas have already graciously descended." He withdrew, sat down, and passed away.
