During the middle of the first month in the twelfth year of Bun'ei (wood-boar year, 1275), while staying temporarily at Kōzan-ji at Toganoo to listen to the thirty lectures on the Treatise on the Five Teachings (Wujiaozhang), I borrowed the five-fascicle punctuated exemplar of the Records of the Transmission of the Avataṃsaka from the hand of Benkei of the Nichiryō quarters of that temple. Overflowing with joy deeply engraved in my heart, after going down to the Southern Capital, I commissioned skilled scribes to copy it. Within this transmission, for the present fascicle, the front text was commissioned to Genren-bō of Nakagawa, and the reverse text was entrusted to Kakugen of Gennin-bō at Shi'on-in at the foot of Mount Kasuga to be copied. As for Jōkai of Nyoen-bō, head of that sub-temple, he was made to add kana and indicate surnames. The notes on kana and surnames on the reverse were recorded by Lord Akisada, the Lay Monk and Major Counselor of Tsuchimikado. Copying directly from that Zen layman's own punctuated exemplar makes this an unequaled witness manuscript.
